What are the main attributes of a good tighthead prop?

What are the main attributes of a good tighthead prop , also how do i coach correct tighthead technique

Rowan

Perhaps you are doing your RFU Level 2 - if so you will need to flesh this out.

Tight Head Prop

  • Be the strong man (the rock) of the Scrum
  • Strong runner with the ball over short distances
  • Normally a square shaped player – big shoulders and strong legs
  • Ability to stay on feet and pass in contact
  • Strong tackler – tackles man and ball

For good scrummaging techniques - look at the online IRB Rugby Ready resource.

I hope this helps

Simon

Rowan I think you need to consider the mental aspects of the position as well. Front row is no place for shrinking violets and good props need to have the self confidence to cope with the mental battle, win or lose. Props, as a breed, are also very technically minded and will talk about angles, forces, the whole technical area for ages. And don't forget the line out. Mick
